Piper USD 203 Names Alum John Black as New Football Coach

Piper USD 203 is pleased to announce the hiring of John Black as a teacher and the next head football coach for the Piper High School program. This is a homecoming for Coach Black. He is a 1988 graduate of Piper High School and served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator under Coach Laural Hobick from 1992-1998. As a student at PHS, Coach Black was a member of the football team and the 1988 state champion baseball team.

“I am thrilled to be returning home to Piper,” said Coach Black. “It has been a dream of mine since my first year as an assistant in 1992 to be the head coach at Piper High School. I have continued to keep tabs on Piper from other parts of the state, and I am so thankful to lead Piper football into this next chapter. I was actually a player on the field during the first game at the current Piper Stadium, and it is exciting to think about getting to be the head coach on the first game played at our new stadium in a few years thanks to the bond supported by the community in January. This job truly is a dream come true.”

Most recently Coach Black has served as a math teacher and the head football coach at Independence High School in Independence, Kan. for the past three years. He has also served as a teacher and head football coach at Neodesha High School, Valley Center High School, and Wamego High School, receiving numerous accolades throughout the state in his more than 20 years of head coaching experience.

“The opportunity to hire someone with such a deeply rooted connection to the community doesn’t come along very often. We are happy to welcome Coach Black back home to Pirate Nation as our next head football coach,” said Dr. Taylor Mapp, Piper High School Activities Director. “Coach Black is highly regarded across the state, and I know there is so much our current and future student athletes will be able to learn from him. He brings with him many connections to both in-state and out-of-state colleges and universities, which will be great for those athletes looking to play beyond high school. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for the Piper football program under Coach Black’s leadership.”
