Men’s Powerlifting Team takes 5th at Tiger Strong Invitational

The Piper Men’s Powerlifting Team of 31 lifters traveled to Fort Scott High School on Saturday, January 14th, to compete in their first meet of the season.

The Pirates took a relatively young team with 14 of our 31 lifters competing in their first ever competition.  Between the Men’s and Women’s teams, the Pirates introduced 25 new lifters to the sport of powerlifting this weekend.

The Men’s team finished 5th out of eighteen teams, missing out on 4th place by a single team point.

Several lifters in the group brought home top finishes in their respective weight class including numerous school records.  For our young lifters, almost all set new personal records in weight lifted.

Top Finishers:

Sr. Von Simmons – 123lb Class – 2nd Overall

In his first ever meet, Von broke the school record with a 185lb bench press also taking first in the meet.  Von barely missed breaking the school record in the squat as well, a record that is within grasp and is likely to be his by the end of the season.

Sr. Ethan Weber – 132lb Class – 5nd Overall

Ethan competed very well in a really tough 132lb class.  Ethan’s clean set a new school record with a 185lb lift.

So. Keith Slaughter – 140lb Class – 2nd Overall

Keith moves up a weight class this year after bringing home the gold medal in the 132lb class last season.  Keith set new personal records in all lifts as well as setting 5 new school records.  Keith’s squat of 360lbs, if done so at the state championship meet, would be a new state record.  It is going to be a fun season seeing him compete with another 4A lifter throughout the season for the 4A title in the 140lb class.

Sr. Ashton Carter – 198lb Class – 5th Overall

Ashton earned 7 total team points with his best lift of 240lbs in the bench press earning a 3rd place medal.  Ashton was very close to breaking the school record in the clean with a 245lb lift, just 10lbs short of the record.  We are confident that we will be adding his name to the record board before the season concludes.

Jr. Aaron Henson – 220lb Class – 3rd Overall

Aaron set new records for the Pirates in bench press, clean, squat, total, and power index.  He also set new school records for all time bench press for juniors with a lift of 315lbs.  Aaron’s total of 1020lbs would have been good for a gold medal at last year’s 4A State Championship winning by 20lbs.

Sr. Samuel Jarvis – HWT Class – 2nd Bench

Samuel’s press of 300lbs earned 8 team points.  His total of 960lbs would have earned him a 4th place finish at the state championship meet.  For this early in the season, we are excited to see where Sam continues to grow by championship time.

Sr. Cameron Rogers – PWR – 4th Clean

Cameron is coming back to the team after missing out on his junior season due to shoulder surgery.  At this point in the season we have been conservative with Cameron’s lifting, but all of his lifts moved very well in his first meet back.  We are confident that Cameron will be standing on the platform when State Championship time comes around.

The Pirates will compete again next Saturday, January 21st at the Pioneer Invitational at Leavenworth High School.
