February is Heart Health Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, one in four deaths are caused by heart disease. There's good news! Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy lifestyle choices in their day-to-day lives and manage their health conditions. Communities, families, and individuals can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices. Make a difference in your community: spread the word about ways to prevent heart disease and encourage people to live health lives.

WHAT FOODS HELP LOWER MY RISK FOR HEART DISEASE AND STROKE?

Choose these foods most of the time:

•    Fruits and vegetables. At least half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables.

•    Whole grains. At least half of your grains should be whole grains. Whole grains include: whole wheat, whole oats, oatmeal, whole-grain corn, brown rice, wild rice, whole rye, whole-grain barley, buckwheat, bulgur, millet, sorghum.

•    Fat-free or low-fat dairy products. These include milk, calcium-fortified soy drinks (soy milk), cheese, yogurt, and other milk products.

•    Proteins. Seafood, skinless poultry, lean meats, beans, eggs, and unsalted nuts.

BE KIND TO YOUR HEART!
